Freestyle wrestling is a dynamic and competitive sport where two wrestlers aim to gain control over their opponent and score points through takedowns, throws, and holds. Unlike Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle allows the use of both the upper and lower body for attacks and defenses. Matches take place on a circular mat, and wrestlers aim to pin their opponent's shoulders to the mat for an immediate win or accumulate points for various successful techniques. It emphasizes strength, agility, technique, and strategic thinking.

The Russian system of freestyle wrestling is renowned for its emphasis on technique, fluidity, and strategic adaptability. It focuses on mastering intricate movements, exploiting an opponent's weaknesses, and maintaining composure under pressure. Wrestlers are trained to combine explosive power with finesse, utilizing seamless transitions between offense and defense. The system integrates a strong foundation in basic skills with advanced maneuvers and encourages creativity in matches. Discipline, rigorous training regimens, and a focus on mental resilience are key components of its success, making Russia a dominant force in international freestyle wrestling.
